More states pursuing legal action against drug companies

The Wall Street Journal reports on increasingly aggressive efforts by attorneys general in several U.S. states to pursue legal actions against drug companies for deceptive marketing.

Using consumer protection laws as a basis, state officials have gone after some major pharmaceutical companies, including GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi SA, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.

Johnson & Johnson shareholders unhappy with management

A story in the Washington Post says that several Johnson & Johnson shareholders spoke of their dissatisfaction with the company during their annual meeting recently. Their complaints focused on a long string of product recalls, ethical lapses and excessive executive pay.

In 2010, the company’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit recalled more than 280 million packages of over-the-counter medications, which included Motrin, children’s Tylenol liquid and Benadryl.

An American plaintiff awarded $11.1 million in court because of her injuries from a vaginal mesh implant is lending her support to women seeking similar legal redress in Scotland and the U.K., according to a story in the Scots paper Daily Record.

Problems drag down J&J profits for quarter

Johnson & Johnson, the worlds’ largest maker of health care products, has announced that its first-quarter profits were down, but that its earnings nevertheless beat analysts’ estimates.

According to a story in The Star Ledger out of Newark, sales for the quarter rose to $17.5 billion, an increase of 8.5 percent from a year earlier, compared to the $17.46 billion that analysts were predicting.
