A judge recently ordered Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon division to pay Irish health care products manufacturer Covidien $176.5 million in damages over a patent dispute, Bloomberg reports.
At the conclusion of a non-jury trial, U.S. District Judge Janet Bond Arterton in New Haven, Conn., ruled that Ethicon infringed three U.S. patents for ultrasonic surgical instruments owned by Covidien.

According to court records, the company CR Bard Inc. used a type of resin-based plastic for its transvaginal mesh devices, despite being warned that the plastic wasn’t suitable for implantation in humans, Bloomberg reports.
Transvaginal mesh implants, made by a number of different manufacturers, are used to treat urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. They have generated widespread complaints of breaking down in patients’ bodies and causing health problems including infections, chronic pain and organ perforation.

A unit of Endo Health Solutions, one of the four companies facing 29,000 lawsuits over vaginal mesh implants, has agreed to pay $54.5 million to settle some of those cases.

A study published in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, measured the success of a surgery called abdominal sacrocolpopexy, which is the standard treatment for a condition called pelvic organ prolapse.
The study analyzed the results of 200 women who underwent the surgery, according to the Wall Street Journal. Many of them reported short-term relief from symptoms and didn’t need repeat surgery.
