Fresenius Dialysis center investigated after deaths

A report on CBS 42 out of Birmingham says the Alabama Department of Health is investigating deaths and illnesses at a kidney dialysis center in the city of Bessemer.

The report says the clinic was closed on May 8, after two patients died and several others were hospitalized.

Researchers find possible explanation for memory loss linked with drugs

Researchers at the University of Arizona have announced a discovery that may eventually help explain the memory loss associated with Lipitor and other drugs in the popular class of cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins.

A news release from the university notes that physicians and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration continue to document reports of patients experiencing fuzzy thinking and memory loss while taking statins.

Dietary supplements make up bulk of FDA recalls

A study published in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine concluded that more than half of all U.S. Food and Drug Administration drug recalls between 2004 and 2012 with a potentially dangerous “Class I” designation were for dietary supplements.

Class I is reserved for products with a reasonable possibility of causing “serious health consequences or death.” Of the 465 drugs recalled under that designation, 237 were dietary supplements.

Building collapse kills at least 6, injures 13 in Philadelphia

A building slated for demolition collapsed in Center City Philadelphia on Wednesday. As of June 6, six people were reported dead and 13 were reported injured, according to CNN.

Though the technical investigation into the cause is ongoing, those with intimate knowledge of the structure and its condition are less than surprised, the Washington Post reported.

FDA official wants stronger warnings for blood pressure drugs

A senior regulator at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is trying to get the agency to issue stronger warnings about the class of blood pressure medications that includes Benicar, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Statin risks may outweigh benefits for older patients

A clinical study has Australian researchers questioning whether the risks of anti-cholesterol drugs called statins may outweigh the benefits for older patients, according to a report in The Conversation.

According to the report, common side effects from statins such as Lipitor include abdominal pain, nausea, muscle pain and/or weakness, and liver damage.
