Woman’s case a bellwether for faulty hip implants

The Rochester Business Journal out of New York says an area woman’s lawsuit is one of two bellwether cases that will affect the outcome of thousands of claims concerning DePuy Orthopaedics hip implants.

Local businesswoman Ann McCracken, 57, had an all-metal hip joint implanted in 2009. According to the story, it was “marketed as particularly appropriate for younger, more active candidates.”

Federal agency gives warning on metal hips

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Website cautions that while all artificial hip replacement systems carry risks that the devices will break down or wear out, those risks are particularly high with “metal-on-metal” implants.

First J&J vaginal mesh case going to court

Johnson & Johnson is set to face the first of 1,800 cases to go to trial over the company’s vaginal mesh implants, Bloomberg reports.

A lawsuit by Linda Gross, 47, will be heard in Superior Court in Atlantic City, N.J. At issue is whether Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon unit adequately warned of the risks of the device.

J&J CEO taking over as chairman

Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky has been elected chairman of the board for the company, Bloomberg reports. He will replace Bill Weldon, who stepped down as CEO in April and is retiring next year.

Weldon had been in charge during some prominent missteps for the company, including a string of recalls.

UK lawmaker wants reforms after artificial hip scandal
