Man sues maker of all-metal hip

A story in the Greenville News out of South Carolina concerns a local man who filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer of his artificial hip.

The report says Tony R. Bishop had the all-metal M2a Magnum Hip System, manufactured by Indiana-based Biomet, implanted in 2006 after he fell off a horse.

Medical device makers partner with FDA

A story in the Star Tribune out of Minnesota concerns a partnership between medical device manufacturers and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, designed to help industries get through the regulatory approval process for new devices.

The Medical Device Innovation Consortium will serve as a public-private partnership between the manufacturers and the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. Organizers intend to include leaders of industry, academia and government agencies.

Firm advertised willingness to approve dangerous implant

Reporters with the U.K. newspaper The Daily Telegraph and the British Medical Journal visited a Slovakian firm as part of an undercover investigation into the European Union’s approval process for medical devices. The firm, EVPU, is one of the private companies authorized to license medical implants for the EU.

Study show link between stroke, hip replacement

A study of patients in Denmark found that those who underwent total hip replacement surgery have a higher risk of stroke in the weeks following the operation, according to a story on MedPage Today.

J&J settles with lawsuit plaintiffs

Johnson & Johnson has settled with about 845 plaintiffs who filed suit over allegations that the company didn’t adequately warn them about the risks of tendon damage from an antibiotic called Levaquin.

According to Bloomberg, the settlements were disclosed in a filing from Minneapolis, where a federal judge is overseeing about 1,900 Levaquin lawsuits. The filing didn’t say how much the company will pay.
