Fracking Chemicals May Have Adverse Developmental, Reproductive Effects

fracking chemicals linked to reproductive damageA new study published by the journal Endocrinology suggests that chemicals used in fracking may decrease men’s sperm count and negatively affect the developmental health of those exposed. Researchers from the University of Missouri observed mice that had been prenatally exposed to fracking chemicals and found lower sperm counts when the mice reached adulthood.

Hydraulic fracturing—more commonly known as “fracking”—uses a combination of sand, water, and chemicals to break ...

Fracking Wells May Cause Premature Birth, High-Risk Pregnancy

fracking wells linked to reproductive harmsIn a new study published last month by the journal Epidemiology, researchers from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health evaluated the effects of unconventional natural gas development on birth outcomes. The study revealed that mothers in areas where concentrated natural gas fracking occurred were more likely to experience a premature birth, and also had a higher chance of having what physicians call a “high-risk” pregnancy.

Government Announces First Ever Federal Fracking Rules

the US government has released fracking regulationsThe U.S. government recently unveiled its first ever nationwide fracking safety rules, TIME reports. The new rules require companies drilling on federal and tribal lands to reveal what chemicals they are using to drill within at least 30 days from the start of operations. The new safety measures also lay out stricter guidelines for collecting wastewater and protecting groundwater while drilling.

Hydraulic fracturing—better known as “fracking”—is a process by ...

Researchers Find Fracking Caused Ohio Earthquake in 2014

New research published in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America found that fracking was responsible for a 3.0 magnitude earthquake felt in Ohio nearly a year ago. The study found that the mode of natural gas extraction known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, activated a fault in the earth that led to a total of 77 earthquakes from March 4-12, 2014. The largest of these registered at a 3.0 magnitude. The drilling was ...

Family Receives $2.95 Million Alleging Harm by Presence of Fracking

A family in Texas harmed by Aruba Petroleum’s release of dangerous air pollutants from fracking wells received $2.95 million in damages in a recent Texas court decision. This is one of the first successful fracking lawsuits in the U.S. where the plaintiff has received significant compensation alleging a fracking company’s actions has led to detriment to their health.

In March 2011, the family filed a fracking lawsuit against eleven oil and gas production companies, including Aruba ...

Study Reveals Fracking May Increase Arsenic in Groundwater

Researchers have been analyzing the health and environmental effects of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) as a method of obtaining natural gas. A story on News Inferno reports heightened levels of arsenic found in groundwater in the Barnett Shale in Texas, an area that spans about 5,000 square miles.

With fracking, silica sand, water, and a mix of over 500 chemicals are injected through a concrete well to break up shale rock up to a mile under the surface. The broken ...
