Meningitis outbreak speads to seven states

The meningitis outbreak linked to fungus-tainted steroid medication had spread to 47 cases in seven different states as of Oct. 5, according to a story in the Boston Globe.

As of Oct. 5, the death toll was still listed at five.

Spinal steroid injection linked to Tennessee meningitis outbreak

State and federal health officials are reporting an outbreak of fungal meningitis in Tennessee.

Tennessee’s chief medical officer said at least 14 people who received steroid injections have been infected and two have died. All but one of those people received steroid injections for back pain at a Nashville clinic identified as the Saint Thomas Outpatient Neurosurgery Center. The other case, reported in North Carolina, was a patient who received the same type of injection.

J&J CEO gets out of testifying in trial

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that lawyers representing pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson successfully quashed a subpoena to compel CEO Alex Gorsky to testify about allegations that inappropriate marketing harmed children taking the company’s drugs.

The case involves a 17-year-old boy whose family sued the company because he grew breasts after taking J&J antipsychotic drug Risperdal.

Court refuses to throw out J&J fine

According to Bloomberg, a Louisiana appeals court declined to throw out an award of nearly $258 million that Johnson & Johnson must pay to state officials, over illegal marketing of its antipsychotic drug Risperdal.

Troubled J&J appoints new executive

According to a story in the Boston Globe, Johnson & Johnson has appointed Bayer executive Sandra E. Peterson to oversee the company’s troubled consumer health and manufacturing operations.

The move is an attempt by Alex Gorsky, who became CEO of Johnson & Johnson in April, to address a host of quality, legal and ethical problems involving products and sales practices.

J&J settles Risperdal lawsuit on first day of trial

On the first day of trial, Johnson & Johnson settled a lawsuit centering on complaints that its antipsychotic drug Risperdal caused a male plaintiff to grow breasts, Bloomberg reports. The terms of the settlement are confidential.

It was the first of about 130 lawsuits alleging that Risperdal caused young males to grow breasts. An additional 290 allege other personal injuries caused by the drug.
