Family of boy with cerebral palsy awarded $21 million

A story in the Baltimore Sun concerns a family awarded $21 million over claims that negligent care by Baltimore’s Harbor Hospital caused their child to be born with cerebral palsy.

Jaylan Norfleet, who was 9 years old as of July, has a fully functioning mind but severe disabilities including very limited use of his legs and hands. An attorney representing the family described him as “literally trapped inside his body.”

More contaminants in drugs from meningitis pharmacy

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning health care providers of additional contaminants in drugs made by the New England Compounding Center – a Massachusetts specialty pharmacy blamed for a fungal meningitis outbreak.

The CDC’s alert says bacterial and fungal contaminants were found in cardioplegia, a drug used in heart surgeries, and the steroid medications betamethasone and triamcinolone.

New York officials seek delay on fracking decision

The New York Department of Conservation wants an extension for releasing a new set of rules that would regulate the controversial natural gas extraction method called “hydraulic fracturing” or “fracking.”

Heart drug digoxin linked to early death

A new study finds that the popular heart drug digoxin may cause patients to die sooner, CBS News reports.

The report cites a study recently published online in the European Heart Journal, showing that patients with atrial fibrillation — a condition where the heart’s upper chambers flutter erratically — died in significant numbers while taking digoxin.
