Diet and exercise program treats diabetics

An article in Forbes describes a diabetes treatment program from Omada Health, which is based on diet and exercise. Author Zina Moukheiber says the program has already yielded some astounding results for participants.

Omada co-founder Sean Duffy based the program on a 2002 study from the National Institutes of Health, which had 3,234 participants diagnosed with pre-diabetes go through a 24-week course of treatment.

Group calls for banning diabetes drug

Nonprofit consumer advocacy group Public Citizen has submitted a petition to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, calling for a diabetes drug to be banned in light of studies linking the it to pancreatic and thyroid cancer.

According to a story about the issue in the journal Nature, a patient stands just a 1.8% chance of surviving for longer than five years once pancreatic cancer spreads.

Medical device makers partner with FDA

A story in the Star Tribune out of Minnesota concerns a partnership between medical device manufacturers and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, designed to help industries get through the regulatory approval process for new devices.

The Medical Device Innovation Consortium will serve as a public-private partnership between the manufacturers and the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. Organizers intend to include leaders of industry, academia and government agencies.

Study finds link between blows to head, brain damage

A new study has uncovered substantial evidence of a link between repeated blows to the head and long-term brain damage.

A report on WBUR out of Boston says Boston University’s Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy conducted the study, in which researchers examined the brains of 85 football players, boxers and military veterans.

FDA considers stronger warning for diabetes drug

A story in the New York Times concerns efforts by federal regulators to develop a stronger label for the diabetes drug Byetta, manufactured by Eli Lilly, following more reports of deadly pancreatitis.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported an additional six cases of pancreatitis. Two of the patients died and four were recovering.
