Women across the country are wondering whether to hope for a Yaz settlement in 2012. Some clients have been involved in the Yaz litigation since 2009 and are ready for some (hopefully good) news. Although the initial Yaz trials were originally scheduled for the end of 2011, and were later rescheduled for January and February, 2012, delays keep moving the possibility of a Yaz settlement back.

The Associated Press reported today that the United States government has agreed to pay $2.5 million to settle a case brought by the family of Robert Stevens, who died after being exposed to anthrax in 2001. Stevens was one of four people who died during the attacks. Seventeen other people were exposed to anthrax and became sick. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Friday that it is opening a formal safety defect investigation into the Chevy Volt.
After conducting a standard crash test on the electric car, the NHTSA found that the vehicle’s battery was damaged and the coolant line was ruptured. A fire broke out a few weeks later and is being blamed on the battery. Follow-up tests demonstrated similar results.

Vioxx Settlement
The New York Times reported today that Merck pled guilty to “illegally introducing a drug into interstate commerce” for its sale of Vioxx. As part of the plea, Merck entered into a larger settlement in which it agreed to pay $950 million.
