Mirena lawsuit filed

A Pennsylvania woman has filed a federal lawsuit against Bayer over complaints that the German drugmaker failed to provide adequate warning of health risks associated with its contraceptive Mirena, Bloomberg reports.

Mirena is an intrauterine device that prevents pregnancy for as long as five years. FDA warns Lipitor and other statins may cause diabetes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently added warnings to the labels of widely used cholesterol drugs called statins, which include Pfizer Inc.’s Lipitor. The new labels warn that the drugs may raise blood sugar levels, could cause memory loss, and may increase the risk of Type II diabetes.

Mesothelioma treatment requires ‘staging’

According to the American Cancer Society, merely arriving at a diagnosis of the type of cancer known as mesothelioma isn’t enough to begin treatment. Medical providers must also “stage” the mesothelioma, which means determining how far the cancer has spread.

Mesothelioma affects the mesothelium, which is the protective lining that covers many of the body’s internal organs. In the vast majority of cases, it’s caused by exposure to asbestos.

Moratorium on fracking ends in N.J.

A story in the Philadelphia Inquirer says New Jersey’s one-year moratorium on the controversial method of natural gas extraction called hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” has expired.

Fracking involves pumping large quantities of water underground to break up subterranean rock formations and release trapped deposits of natural gas. It’s controversial because the fracking water contains toxic chemicals, including the carcinogen benzene.

Documents show J&J knew hip implant had high failure rate

Legal documents released in Johnson & Johnson’s trial regarding all-metal hip implants reveal that the company was aware of problems with the devices in 2008 – two years before recalling them, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The American Psychiatric Association recently voted to drop its old recommendation against diagnosing depression in the bereaved, which the Washington Post noted could be a financial bonanza for antidepressant manufacturers.
