Studies find higher risk with newer contraceptives

A story in U.K. newspaper The Mirror concerns the higher risk of “third-generation” contraceptive pills, compared to ones that have been on the market for longer.

Opening arguments in transvaginal mesh case

Opening arguments took place in the court case involving a woman who needed 18 operations to repair damage from a transvaginal mesh implant.

Her lawyer alleged that manufacturer Johnson & Johnson sold the device, which is supposed to shore up weakened pelvic muscles, after testing it inadequately and failing to warn of all the risks.

Swiss insurer supports claim against Bayer

Switzerland’s largest health insurer announced that it’s supporting a young woman who has filed suit against pharmaceutical giant Bayer, claiming the company’s Yasmin birth control pill caused a pulmonary embolism that left her severely disabled.

The insurer, CSS, will be a joint plaintiff in a lawsuit seeking reimbursement for medical expenses. According to a Reuters article, the young woman’s medical treatment has amounted to about $648,600.
