Blood pressure drug Benicar linked to problems

A report from the Mayo Clinic links blood pressure drug Benicar to stomach problems including chronic diarrhea, vomiting, intestinal inflammation and weight loss, according to ABC News.

In some cases, the symptoms were so bad that patients required hospitalization.

Jury deliberating in vaginal mesh trial

A jury has begun deliberating in the case of a woman seeking $3.38 million for lost earnings and past and future medical expenses connected to injuries from a vaginal mesh implant.

Certain ages at greatest risk of brain injury

According to the Mayo Clinic, the very young and the very old are at greatest risk of traumatic brain injury.

The Clinic lists the people most at risk as:

  • Children, especially newborns to 4-year-olds
  • Young adults, especially those between ages 15 and 24
  • Adults who are 75 and older

Doctor says energy drinks are really drugs

In a column in USA Today, physician Kevin Pho, M.D., warns about the health hazards of high-caffeine energy drinks.

“Perhaps most effective would be to stop seeing energy drinks as beverages, and instead view them as liquid stimulant drugs,” Pho writes. “Because that’s what they really are.”

He cites a recent survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which reported more than 20,000 emergency room visits involving energy drinks in 2011. That’s double the number from 2007.

New York’s selection of a geologist with industry ties for a study on the potential link between hydraulic fracturing and earthquakes has both environmentalists and government watchdogs concerned, according to a Bloomberg article.
