Study says egg whites may lower blood pressure

A study presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society suggests that eating egg whites regularly could be just as effective in lowering blood pressure as taking certain medications.

Study leader Zhipeng Yu, Ph.D., of Jilin University credits a peptide, one of the building blocks of proteins, that occurs in the egg whites.

Drug for depression triggers SJS

An ABC News story out of Colorado tells the story of a woman’s ordeal with Stevens Johnson Syndrome, which she suffered after taking a drug prescribed for depression.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome occurs when the skin and mucous membranes react severely to a medication or infection. It can cause the top layer of skin to shed and die, and is considered a medical emergency.

FDA doing reassessment of diabetes drug

The Wall Street Journal says the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is doing a reassessment of Avandia – a diabetes drug manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline that was once regarded as a blockbuster in the pharmaceutical market.

Diabetes drug maker allegedly hid cancer risk

A lawsuit has gone to jury trial in Los Angeles, alleging that the manufacturer of the diabetes drug Actos concealed its cancer risks, Bloomberg reports.

The plaintiff’s lawyer claims that internal studies by Takeda, Asia’s biggest drug manufacturer, uncovered Actos’s links to bladder cancer as early as 2004. But the company didn’t alert U.S. regulators until seven years later, in order to protect more than $1.6 billion in annual sales.

World Health Organization targets hypertension

The World Health Organization is calling for more efforts to prevent and control high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, as part of its annual observation of World Health Day.

Survey: Many women misunderstand contraception

Reuters reports that many women are under the impression that birth control pills and condoms are more effective than they actually are.

The story says that although birth control pills and condoms are the most popular forms of reversible birth control in the country, they aren’t the most effective. The pregnancy rate with “typical use” is about nine percent per year with birth control pills, and between 18 and 21 percent with condoms.
