Daiichi Sankyo to Pay $39 Million to Settle Kickback Claims After Whistleblower Lawsuit

Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd, a global pharmaceutical company, is being forced to pay $39 million to the United States government and state Medicaid programs to settle claims that the company paid doctors kickbacks to prescribe its drugs. Reuters reported that the fine was negotiated with the Department of Justice based on a whistleblower case by a former sales representative.

U.S. District Court Dismisses F.D.A. Whistleblower Suit

A recent decision by a U.S. District Court Judge dismissed a whistleblower lawsuit filed by six current and former scientists at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The employees had complained about the safety of various medical devices that came through the FDA. Hedge Fund and Owner to Pay $2.2 Million in Whistleblower Case

A hedge fund, Paradigm Capital Management, and its owner will pay $2.2 million to settle federal charges that the firm set up trades with a conflict of interest, and subsequently fired a high-ranking employee who reported the investment fraud. The Securities and Exchange Commission announced the settlement. This is the first case in which the agency protected a whistleblower under the new anti-retaliation law adopted in 2010.
