Women taking risks with black market birth control

Missouri television station KSDK cites a new study by the American Journal of Public Health, which says that more Latinas are crossing the border into Mexico for birth control pills. The study also found that undocumented immigrants are buying birth control on the black market.

Birth control is cheaper and more readily accessible in Mexico, where it’s sold over the counter.

FDA schedules panel for hip implant review

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced an official review of all-metal hip implants, in response to growing concerns about their reported early failure rates.

According to a Reuters report, the FDA has scheduled an advisory panel for June 27 and 28, which will gather input from scientists, researchers, patients and medical practitioners. Consultant: Scrutiny forcing FDA to tighten standards

The federal Food and Drug Administration is becoming stricter about its process for approving medical devices, according to a consultant for regulatory affairs. Those changes are coming about in response to scrutiny and criticism over a process that allows devices to be approved based on their similarity to devices already on the market.

Many transvaginal mesh implants were unnecessary, caused complications

A Consumer Reports article on the hazards of certain medical devices recommends that patients protect themselves by considering what alternatives are available.

In the case of transvaginal mesh implants, for example, patients should ask their doctors what will happen if they don’t get the devices. According to the report, many women who received transvaginal mesh for pelvic organ prolapse – where the pelvic organs move out of alignment because of weakened muscles – never needed the surgery.

Journalist raises concerns about Beyaz

In an entry for re:Cycling, the blog of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research, journalist Holly Grigg-Spall questions the health claims that Bayer makes for its birth control pill Beyaz, a variation on the corporation’s top-selling Yaz contraceptive.

Grigg-Spall points out that Beyaz is essentially Yaz with addition of a B vitamin, supposedly to alleviate the possibility of pregnancy complications and birth defects from the original Yaz pill.

An article on Website Helium.com by physician Dr Pandula Siribaddana lists the side effects associated with birth control pill Ocella.
