Study: More research needed on hip implants, cancer

The BBC reports that a British study found no evidence of a link between metal-on-metal hip implants and cancer. But the analysis of 41,000 patients covered only seven years following hip replacement surgery, and researchers said follow-up will be necessary.

British health agency issues warning about metal hips

Britain’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has issued a warning that surgeons should stop using a particular type of hip implant because of “unacceptably high” rates of follow-up operations.

The report mentions that metal-on-metal implants – consisting of both a ball and a socket coated with metal – have come under scrutiny in both Britain and the United States recently over concerns about their early failure rate, and metal particles breaking off and releasing toxic metal ions into the bloodstream.

Journalist’s widow describes death from blood clot

“Press Pass,” the blog for NBC news show “Meet the Press,” features an interview with Melanie Bloom – widow of late NBC news correspondent David Bloom, and founder of the Coalition to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Melanie describes David’s death nine years ago from deep vein thrombosis, which is a blood clot in one of the larger veins. He suffered a pulmonary embolism when a blood clot from a vein in his leg migrated to his lungs.

Lopez McHugh investigating Beyaz blood clot risk

Lopez McHugh is currently accepting cases in an attempt to recover compensation for women who were injured and not properly warned of Beyaz blood clot risks. Higher-risk birth control pills also include Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella. At least seven scientific papers have shown that these drugs are more likely to cause blood clots than other, more established birth control pills.

FDA panel on hip implants seeks public input

A federal Food and Drug Administration panel examining the safety of metal-on-metal hip implants is inviting members of the public to comment on the devices.

The FDA’s Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee has scheduled sessions for June 27 and 28 to examine the question of whether the hip implants should be subject to new testing standards and review requirements before going on the market in the U.S.

CEO may have ties to recalled implants

New Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky is already facing some questions regarding his possible involvement with a recalled line of metal-on-metal hip implants, according to a recent report in the Newark Times Ledger.

Gorsky, who started with the company in 1988, is replacing outgoing CEO William Weldon.
