Study: Job stress increases heart attack risk

A study published in the journal Lancet finds that job-related stress increases the risk of a heart attack.

According to an ABC News article about the study, a team of European researchers examined a total of 13 previous studies conducted between 1986 and 2006 evaluating job strain as a risk factor for heart attack and death.

Medical products companies bribing doctors

According to a Reuters story, sales representatives for Abbott Laboratories Inc’s subsidiaries routinely buy gifts for physicians in India to bribe them into prescribing certain drugs.

The practice is so blatant that an Abbott sales-strategy guide explicitly states that doctors who pledge to prescribe the company’s branded drugs, or who’ve already prescribed certain amounts, can expect gifts such as coffee makers, cookware and vacuum cleaners in return.

Study: Antidepressants raise accident risk

According to a story in the Daily Mail, a study from the University of Taiwan finds that taking common antidepressants increases the risk of automobile accidents.

Researchers found those taking a common group of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors were 72 percent more at risk.
