While these drugs contain drospirenone, a new hormone, many other birth control pills contain levonorgestrel, which has been on the market for decades. Drospirenone has a variety of effects on the body that are not fully understood, but that are known to be linked to blood clots. For example, drospirenone may increase blood pressure. It acts as a diuretic in some women, which can cause dehydration. Finally, drospirenone can raise potassium levels or increase cholesterol. All of these effects may increase the risk of blood clots.
The four scientific papers showing that drospirenone is more dangerous than more established birth control pills found a significantly increased risk of blood clots. For example, one study in the British Medical Journal found that the risk may be anywhere from 1.2 to 4.7 times greater. For more information about these studies, click here.
While the FDA is currently reviewing the above information to determine what action to take, its counterpart in Europe, the European Medicines Agency, has already determined that birth control pills containing drospirenone should have a stronger warning.
