FDA warns of children ingesting eyedrops, decongestants

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about children five years of age and younger swallowing over-the-counter eyedrops and nasal decongestants.

The warnings encompass a wide range of brand and generic names, according to the Los Angeles Times. Most of them currently don’t come in child-resistant packaging. But the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently proposed requiring child-resistant packaging on all such products.

FDA: Drug may cause potentially deadly condition

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has ordered a labeling change for the epilepsy medication ethosuximide, sold under the brand name Zarontin, reflecting the agency’s determination that it can cause serious skin conditions including the potentially fatal Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a rare, serious disorder in which the skin and mucous membranes react severely to a medication or infection.

FDA issues stricter warning for epilepsy drug Gilenya

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reviewed Novartis AG’s multiple sclerosis drug Gilenya, and concluded that patients who’ve suffered a heart attack or stroke within the past six months shouldn’t take it.

The review came about after a 59-year-old patient died in November, less than 24 hours after taking the first dose of the drug.

Europe’s drug regulator, the European Medicines Agency, recently requested stronger safety warnings for Gilenya after the agency concluded its review of the drug.

Pfizer issues recall of pain reliever

Pfizer Inc. has recalled more than 650,000 bottles of Advil pain-relief medicine because of the potential for a strong odor in the product, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Journal reports that Pfizer issued the voluntary recall of eight lots of Advil Liqui-Gels bottles to retail-distribution centers only, not at the consumer level.
