FDA warns Lipitor and other statins may cause diabetes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently added warnings to the labels of widely used cholesterol drugs called statins, which include Pfizer Inc.’s Lipitor. The new labels warn that the drugs may raise blood sugar levels, could cause memory loss, and may increase the risk of Type II diabetes.

Questions about jurisdiction may have held federal regulators back from investigating potential hazards that bed rails in hospitals and nursing homes present for seniors, the New York Times reports.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning that the potentially dangerous eye drops and decongestants – including a wide range of brand-name and generic varieties – don’t come in child-resistant packages, and can sicken children.
