FDA investigating defective-designed bed rails after 27 deaths

Although federal investigators are now studying the safety risk that bed rails present for residents of nursing homes, an article in the New York Times says regulators have long been aware of that risk and have done little to crack down on their manufacturers.

Group says Medicare spurred meningitis outbreak

A consumer advocacy group has raised the possibility that Medicare policy spurred the rise of large-scale drug compounding, which is widely considered the indirect cause of a deadly meningitis outbreak, according to congressional newspaper The Hill.

Another energy drink linked to problems

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has linked another energy drink to health problems, according to Bloomberg.

The FDA has named Rockstar Inc.’s energy drinks in 13 adverse event reports dating to 2006, including increased heart rate, abdominal pain and nausea, and four hospitalizations. No deaths were cited.

EU agencies would have approved ‘toxic’ hip implant

A joint investigation by the Telegraph, a U.K. newspaper, and the British Medical Journal exposed flaws in the European Union’s regulatory approval process for medical devices.

FDA warns about blood clot filters

A report in the Boston Globe concerns a U.S. Food and Drug Administration warning that filters meant to stop blood clots from reaching the lungs can move or break, with potentially deadly consequences for patients.
