Different drugs used in treatment of Stevens-Johnson syndrome

If you’re diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, according to the Mayo Clinic, you may receive one of the following varieties of medication currently being studied in the treatment of the condition:

Intravenous corticosteroids — For adults, intravenous corticosteroids may lessen the severity of symptoms and shorten recovery time if started within a day or two of the first appearance of symptoms. But they may also increase risk of complications for children.

FDA approves new blood thinner

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new blood thinner manufactured by Pfizer Inc. and Bristol-Myers Squibb. A Bloomberg report describes Eliquis as a “potential blockbuster heart drug.”

The Food and Drug Administration cleared Eliquis for the prevention of blood clots that develop in patients with the heart rhythm disorder atrial fibrillation, after the manufacturers failed in two previous efforts to win approval for the drug.

Blood thinner approved in Japan

Regulators in Japan have approved the blood thinner Eliquis, the Japan Daily Times reports.

Eliquis is the brand name for apixaban, manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co and Pfizer Inc. It’s among a new class of blood thinners meant to replace decades-old warfarin, which is effective but can be difficult to use because it requires dietary restrictions and frequent testing.

Editorial says no fracking without study

An editorial in the Baltimore Sun says Maryland should not allow the natural gas extraction method called hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” in the state without an independent study on the subject.

The editorial notes that natural gas companies have balked at providing $2 million to fund such a study, which should make Maryland residents wary.

FDA Claims Manufacturer Withheld Info

According to U.S. Food and Drug Administration documents, the manufacturer of diabetes drug Byetta tried to conceal from federal regulators a study that linked the drug to potential heart problems.

In large part because of Amylin Pharmaceuticals’ deceitfulness, The Street reports, the FDA rejected another diabetes drug the company submitted for approval. And Amylin Pharmaceuticals subsequently misled investors about the reason for that rejection.

According to The Street, Amylin has been selling Byetta since 2005.
