Former FDA director: Bayer withheld info on Yaz

According to Bloomberg, a former director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported that pharmaceutical maker Bayer withheld company research indicating that its Yasmin line of birth control pills caused increased blood clots.

David Kessler, the former FDA commissioner, made those allegations in a report unsealed as part of the ongoing litigation on behalf of patients claiming to be injured by the contraceptives, Bloomberg reports.

Trial deadline extended in birth control lawsuit

The Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia has delayed trial deadlines in the cases over Yaz/Yasmin/Beyaz birth control for another 60 days, extending them until July 9.

Judge Sandra Moss announced the latest extension on April 25, 2012. She’d previously announced a delay on March 9, 2012. This will allow the parties in the case more time to negotiate.

Settlement in Yaz case higher than first reported

Bayer is paying $142 million to settle 651 lawsuits over claims that its birth control pills cause blood clots, according to a newsletter published by the company. Initial reports announced settlements of about $110 million.

The latest figure was included in the Bayer Stockholders’ Newsletter for the first quarter. According to the newsletter, the company paid an average of about $218,000 a case.
