Studies find higher risk with newer contraceptives

A story in U.K. newspaper The Mirror concerns the higher risk of “third-generation” contraceptive pills, compared to ones that have been on the market for longer.

It concerns two different studies by the Boston University School of Medicine into two different types of birth control. The results were published in the British Medical Journal.

Swiss insurer supports claim against Bayer

Switzerland’s largest health insurer announced that it’s supporting a young woman who has filed suit against pharmaceutical giant Bayer, claiming the company’s Yasmin birth control pill caused a pulmonary embolism that left her severely disabled.

The insurer, CSS, will be a joint plaintiff in a lawsuit seeking reimbursement for medical expenses. According to a Reuters article, the young woman’s medical treatment has amounted to about $648,600.

Regulators approve Bayer IUD

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Skyla, an intrauterine device manufactured by Bayer.

A Reuters report describes Skyla as a T-shaped polyethylene device that releases low doses of the hormone progestin, and is designed to prevent pregnancy for three years. It’s the first new device of its type to be approved in 12 years.

Risky newer contraceptives spur outcry in France

A public health watchdog group in France is calling for doctors to severely cut back on the amounts of newer birth control pills they prescribe, citing the risk of blood clots.

An account in South African newspaper The Times quotes National Drugs Safety Agency Director General Dominique Maraninchi as saying that older types of birth control pills should be the standard.

According to Reuters, a recent study from Israel “adds evidence” to the claim that birth control pills containing the compound drospirenone carry a higher risk of blood clots than other types of oral contraceptives on the market.

French government concerned over newer birth control pills

Reuters reports that French health regulators intend to stop reimbursement for newer types of birth control pills, over concerns that they cause blood clots.

France’s health ministry said it will stop reimbursing prescription costs of “third-generation” pills such as Bayer’s Yasmin line starting March 31.
