Psychologist questions effectiveness of antidepressants

A recent report on CBS’s 60 Minutes questions whether antidepressants are any more effective than placebos.

The report features an interview with Irving Kirsch, associate director of the Placebo Studies Program at Harvard Medical School, who says clinical trials simply don’t show a clinically significant advantage to antidepressants over dummy sugar pills.

Mesothelioma proposed for list of 9/11 ailments

According to a CBS News story, federal health officials are considering adding mesothelioma and 49 other types of cancer to a list of conditions for which first Sept. 11 first responders and Manhattan residents will get free treatment and compensation payments.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s decision followed a March recommendation by an advisory committee made up of doctors, union officials and community health advocates, who recommended that cancer be added.

Man recovers from enormous blood clot

Fox News gives an account of a man who survived a two-and-a-half-foot blood clot stretching from his knee to his abdomen.

Workers tested after benzene exposure

An article in Baton Rouge newspaper The Advocate says precautionary tests were performed on a number of ExxonMobil Chemical Plant employees and contractors after a leak of a liquid that contained benzene.

Benzene, a known carcinogen, has been linked with some forms of leukemia.

In a recent piece for political newsletter Counterpunch, writer Missy Beattie discusses her reluctance to take prescription antidepressants.
