Increase in strokes among younger people

According to a story by Channel 6 Action News out of Philadelphia, there’s been an alarming increase in the number of relatively young people suffering strokes.

The story cites figures by the Center for Disease Control, which found the rate of people hospitalized for stroke between the ages of 15 and 44 has gone up 37 percent between 1995 and 2008.

FDA issues stricter warning for epilepsy drug Gilenya

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reviewed Novartis AG’s multiple sclerosis drug Gilenya, and concluded that patients who’ve suffered a heart attack or stroke within the past six months shouldn’t take it.

The review came about after a 59-year-old patient died in November, less than 24 hours after taking the first dose of the drug.

Europe’s drug regulator, the European Medicines Agency, recently requested stronger safety warnings for Gilenya after the agency concluded its review of the drug.

Yaz/Beyaz Settlements: $220,000 average could cost Bayer

Bayer could end up paying billions of dollars settling lawsuits alleging that the German corporation’s Yasmin line of birth control pills caused blood clots.

In a settlement involving 500 lawsuits, news reports are claiming that the company is paying at least $110 million – amounting to about $220,000 a case.

Report says Yaz, Yasmin big money-makers for Bayer

Shannon Pettypiece of Bloomberg Television provides some context for the recent national debates about birth control, pointing out that birth control constitutes “big business for big pharma.”

In a recent report, Ms. Pettypiece observed that Americans spent $5 billion last year for birth control. She said the German corporation Bayer gets about $1.5 billion a year from its drugs Yaz and Yasmin.
