Merck to Settle NuvaRing Intrauterine Contraceptive Device Lawsuits

On Friday, February 7, 2014, Merck & Co announced that it is willing to pay $100 million to settle all NuvaRing intrauterine contraceptive device lawsuits.

The NuvaRing contraceptive is a flexible ring that releases the hormones estrogen and progestin in order to prevent pregnancy. NuvaRing has been associated with an increased risk of forming blood clots, which can in turn cause heart attacks, strokes, even death. $2.5 billion J&J hip settlement announced

Johnson & Johnson recently announced a $2.47 billion hip settlement through its DePuy subsidiary.

DePuy’s Articular Surface Replacement (ASR) hip implant was recalled in 2010. Now, an estimated 8,000 lawsuits are being filed over the device. The $2.47 billion settlement announced by J&J is likely to settle a large portion–though not all–of the pending cases.

Bard Settles Vaginal Mesh Case Before Trial

Bloomberg.com is reporting that C.R. Bard Inc. has agreed to settle a claim involving one of the company’s vaginal mesh implants. The case involving a New Jersey woman’s claim that Bard’s Avaulta Plus insert caused her internal problems including urinary problems was scheduled to begin on September 23, 2013 in the Superior Court of New Jersey in Atlantic City.
