The Esophageal Cancer Action Network, or ECAN, is working to shine light on the possibility of over-the-counter acid reflux medications increasing a patient’s risk for a type of cancer called Barrett’s esophagus. A new batch of research shows that frequent and long-term use of some of the most commonly used heartburn medications may, over time, lead to kidney damage.
Drugs like Prilosec OTC, Prevacid, and Nexium fall into a class known as PPIs, or proton-pump inhibitors. The drugs work by stifling the body’s ability to produce gastric acid; one of the key factors in experiencing frequent heartburn.
