FDA Advises Leaving Black Box Warning on Pfizer’s Chantix

The United States Food and Drug Administration decided to maintain the black box warning on Pfizer’s smoking cessation drug Chantix (varenicline). The drug continues to carry the very serious black box warning which was first added to the label in 2009.

Anti-smoking drug Chantix linked to heart attacks, strokes

An analysis of clinical trials found the anti-smoking drug Chantix, manufactured by Pfizer Inc., produced a higher rate of heart attacks and strokes in patients who used the treatment compared to those who didn’t.

An FDA warning says it’s “more likely that (the increased risk) is related to the drug and not purely a chance finding.”
