GM Allowed Woman to Take Blame for Fiancé’s Death

A Texas woman who blamed herself for the death of her fiancé in a car crash is suing General Motors (GM) alleging the company covered up a defective ignition switch in her car. The now 31 year old pled guilty to criminally negligent homicide in 2004. She was sentenced to five years of deferred punishment and 260 hours of community service. GM Details Plan for Compensation Fund for Victims of Defective Ignition Switches

Late last month General Motors announced its compensation plan that will offer payments to victims who were in an accident in which the air bag failed to deploy as a result of a defective ignition switch. The fund may also offer compensation to victims who previously accepted out-of-court settlements that occurred prior to the recall.

Attorney Report Uncovers More Details of GM Ignition Defect

A former federal prosecutor recently issued a 315-page report providing details of General Motors’ knowledge of an ignition switch defect that caused numerous accidents, injuries, and deaths. The auto manufacturer issued a recall in February 2014 of 2.6 million vehicles, and is paying a $35 million fine to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for failing to recall the vehicle in a timely manner. At Least 74 Dead in GM Cars with Failed Airbags

According to a recent report, there have been at least 74 deaths in car accidents involving General Motors’ cars where the airbag failed to deploy. According to Reuters’ analysis of the government’s fatal-crash data, there were 74 deaths from 2003 until 2012 with characteristics that indicate a faulty GM ignition switch or other defect was to blame.

GM Continues to Recall More Vehicles for New Issues

The General Motors recall announcements just keep coming. Earlier in June, the automotive giant issued a recall of an additional 89,000 cars of various types due to potentially dangerous issues separate from the widely-known ignition switch recall.
