Lipitor Claims Filed in St. Louis on Behalf of 23 Women Represented by Lopez McHugh, LLP

ST. LOUIS (December 2015) – Lipitor suits have been filed in St. Louis on behalf of 23 women diagnosed with diabetes after taking the popular statin drug. The Lipitor lawsuit (Cause No. 1522-CC00478-01) was filed in the 22nd Circuit Court of Missouri in St. Louis and includes allegations that numerous women were diagnosed with type II diabetes after taking Pfizer’s blockbuster drug Lipitor.

Lipitor is prescribed for the treatment of high cholesterol levels. Millions of people in the United States take statins to control their cholesterol – including nearly 24 percent of women over the age of 45. Studies, beginning as early as 1996, have suggested a link between Lipitor and increased blood sugar in women. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has gone so far as to issue warnings regarding Lipitor; however, plaintiffs in Lipitor lawsuits argue these warnings are inadequate.

These 23 Lopez McHugh clients will join a number of other women with Lipitor diabetes claims pending in St. Louis. The number of claimants is expected to continue to rise, with the first trial scheduled for May 2016.

Meanwhile, the first Lipitor diabetes trial in federal court is scheduled for spring 2016. Lipitor lawsuits filed in federal court were consolidated into the Lipitor MDL (multidistrict litigation) in 2013. At that time, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation determined that the Lipitor cases filed in various federal courts involved common questions of fact and that consolidation of the Lipitor cases was appropriate. The MDL is currently in the District of South Carolina before the Honorable Richard M. Gergel.

At its formation, the Lipitor MDL had 24 cases; today, the number of filed cases brought by women against pharmaceutical manufacturer Pfizer exceeds 2,000. The women bringing these Lipitor lawsuits allege that taking Lipitor caused them to develop diabetes and that they had not been warned of this risk by Pfizer.
