A jury has awarded $25 million to a Rhode Island couple in a medical malpractice lawsuit filed against Rhode Island Hospital. Rhode Island Public Radio notes that the verdict is one of the largest ever awarded for negligence in the state.
In 2009, a Rhode Island man was admitted to Rhode Island Hospital after hitting his head. He was later discharged with severe and permanent injuries. The couple filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against Rhode Island hospital, alleging that personnel misdiagnosed the man’s injuries and failed to recognize the signs of his worsening condition. The Rhode Island Hospital has apologized for the tragic incident, stating that the facility has since implemented new safety procedures to ensure such an event never happens again.
According to Rhode Island Public Radio, the damage was so excessive that the man’s wife applied to become his legal guardian, as he was not capable of representing himself. The $25 million awarded by the jury will compensate the couple for what they have already suffered, as well as cover future medical expenses.
