Blood Pressure Medication Linked to Intestinal Issues

Benicar, Azor, Tribenzor among Drugs which May Cause Problems

Benicar has been linked to severe intestinal issues and sprue-like enteropathyAn article recently published in Pharmacy and Therapeutics Journal has linked the drug olmesartan to drug induced sprue-like enteropathy, a condition that results in issues similar to those caused by celiac disease. Olmesartan is a drug used to treat high blood pressure that is marketed under the brand names Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor, and Tribenzor, as well as being available in generic form. Sprue-like enteropathy is a condition that is characterized by severe chronic diarrhea and weight loss.

The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first warned the public about a possible link between olmesartan and intestinal issues in the summer of 2013, when it issued a safety communication in which it stated that intestinal problems may begin months or even years after a person starts taking olmesartan, and in some cases can be serious enough to require hospitalization.

Can I File a Benicar, Azor, or Tribenzor Lawsuit?

Each case is different, so you will need to discuss your case with an experienced attorney to determine whether you have a claim. The Benicar lawyers of Lopez McHugh, LLP are currently offering free consultation to individuals who believe they may have developed sprue-like enteropathy after taking olmesartan. A lawsuit may allege that Benicar was defectively designed, manufactured, or marketed, and that the manufacturers failed to adequately warn consumers about the risks associated with taking olmesartan. An experienced attorney can help you determine whether a lawsuit makes sense to hold the manufacturers responsible if they hid information, and can determine the best place to file a lawsuit.

Can I Recover Compensation Through an Olmesartan Lawsuit?

Whether you can recover for your injuries through an olmesartan lawsuit depends upon the extent and nature of your injuries, what the manufacturers knew, and dozens of other factors. The kinds of damages typically awarded in a successful pharmaceutical drug case includes compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of quality of life, future medical care, and lost compensation. In certain cases, punitive damages may also be awarded.
