IUDs, implants recommended teen birth control

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends IUDs or hormonal implants as the best birth control for girls, according to the Miami Herald.

Increase in strokes among younger people

According to a story by Channel 6 Action News out of Philadelphia, there’s been an alarming increase in the number of relatively young people suffering strokes.

Study: Job stress increases heart attack risk

A study published in the journal Lancet finds that job-related stress increases the risk of a heart attack.

According to an ABC News article about the study, a team of European researchers examined a total of 13 previous studies conducted between 1986 and 2006 evaluating job strain as a risk factor for heart attack and death.

Study: Chocolate reduces stroke risk

A recent study finds that eating chocolate may help reduce the incidence of stroke in men, the Los Angeles Times reports.

FDA committe recommends monitoring of Beyaz

An advisory committee for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended continued monitoring of Bayer’s birth control pill Beyaz, following a review that made note of serious “adverse events” connected with the pill – including five deaths.

Heavy drinkers have high stroke risk

According to a story in the Los Angeles Times, a recent study showed that heavy drinkers are at a higher risk of stroke.

Researchers in France concluded that heavy drinkers who consume three or more servings of alcohol per day are at an increased risk of a type of stroke called an intercerebral hemorrhage, and are more likely to have that stroke at an earlier age than non-drinkers.
