Settlement reached in DePuy Hip Implant Lawsuits

The New York Times reports that a tentative deal has been reached to settle thousands of DePuy hip implant lawsuits. The lawsuits were filed against Johnson & Johnson subsidiary DePuy Orthopaedics, alleging premature failure of DePuy’s ASR metal-on-metal hip implants. The settlement, which still requires court approval, could reach up to $4 billion dollars.

Approximately 12,000 hip implant lawsuits have been filed against DePuy Orthopaedics. DePuy recalled the implants in mid-2010.

First Federal DePuy Hip Replacement Trial Set to Begin

The National Law Journal is reporting that the first federal trial involving DePuy Orthopaedic Inc.’s metal-on-metal hip implant devices is set to begin on September 9, 2013 in Cleveland, Ohio. This is the first of nearly 8,000 cases currently being coordinated in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) before Judge David Katz.

Nearly 16,800 recorded problems with metal hip joints

According to a Bloomberg story, nearly 16,800 adverse events associated with metal-on-metal hip implants were reported in the United States from 2000 through 2011.
