IUD becoming more popular as birth control

A national survey has found that increasing numbers of women in the United States are using intrauterine devices (IUDs) as their reversible birth control method, Reuters reports.

Researchers found that 8.5 percent of U.S. women using birth control in 2009 chose an IUD or contraceptive implant, compared to just under four percent in 2007.

Reproductive health experts say that IUDs are the most effective method of birth control. But some health care providers still harbor reservations about the IUDs.

Study: Women have inaccurate perception of IUDs

According to a recent study, most women have inaccurate perceptions about the safety and effectiveness of intrauterine devices, Reuters reports.

Researchers surveyed more than 1,600 women between the ages of 18 and 50 who had visited one of four clinics in Pennsylvania, and only about one in five was aware that IUDs are more effective at preventing pregnancy than birth control pills.

Warning connected to Mirena IUD

According to the Mayo Clinic, Bayer’s Mirena intrauterine device, which is inserted into the uterus for long-term birth control, is the only hormonal IUD with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval.

But the Mayo Clinic cautions that it isn’t appropriate for all women, and provides some conditions under which it shouldn’t be used.
