Merck to Settle NuvaRing Intrauterine Contraceptive Device Lawsuits

On Friday, February 7, 2014, Merck & Co announced that it is willing to pay $100 million to settle all NuvaRing intrauterine contraceptive device lawsuits.

The NuvaRing contraceptive is a flexible ring that releases the hormones estrogen and progestin in order to prevent pregnancy. FDA: discontinue high-dose acetaminophen

The FDA is asking health professionals to discontinue prescribing acetaminophen products that contain over 325 mg per dose. A recent FDA statement reports that there is no data proving that doses over this amount provide any benefit to negate the increased risk. Acetaminophen is often found in prescription drugs taken as pain relievers and is often found in conjunction with other active ingredients.

Nationwide recall of all sterile drugs from compounding pharmacy

An FDA News Release reports of a nationwide voluntary recall of all non-expired sterile drugs distributed by Abrams Royal Compounding Pharmacy. The Dallas company is recalling all intravenous injections, injectable medication, eye drops, nasal sprays, pellet implants, inhalation solutions, and eye ointments made between June 17th and December 17th 2013.

FDA Officially Bans Use of BPA in Baby Bottles and Cups

The New York Times reports that a recent statement issued by the Food and Drug Administration officially prohibits the use of BPA in baby bottles and children’s cups.

Bisphenol A, known commonly by its acronym BPA, is a synthetic compound that is commonly used in plastic. Although the F.D.A. declared BPA safe in 2008, concerns arose regarding potential health risks in 2010.

FDA Goes After Illegal Diabetes Drug Market

The FDA is tracking distributers who are illegally marketing alternative diabetes treatment. Fifteen companies were identified to be selling misleading dietary supplements as diabetes treatment or selling prescription drugs online without requiring a prescription.
