An Alabama mother and father have filed a Zofran lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline alleging the company’s anti-nausea medication caused their son’s congenital heart defect. The claims claims the mother used Zoran during her pregnancy to help with morning sickness. When the couple’s child was born in 2013, he was diagnosed with atrial septal defect, a severe birth complication that has required multiple surgeries.

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has moved to consolidate a dozen federal Zofran birth defect lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. In its October 13 transfer order, the Panel explained the decision to centralize in Massachusetts. Zofran maker GlaxoSmithKline had originally petitioned for the litigation to be held in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, where the company is headquartered.

A Pennsylvania Superior Court panel has decided to uphold an $11.65 million verdict awarded to a couple who claim the epilepsy drug Topamax caused their son to be born with a cleft lip, The Patriot News reports. The court ruling denied an appeal from Topamax manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceutical, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, which sought to overturn the ruling.

On October 30 , 2013, a Philadelphia jury sided with the woman who took Topamax for six months during her pregnancy and gave birth to a boy with cleft lip.
