Family gets $750,000 in fracking case

Unsealed court documents say natural gas drillers, including Range Resources Corp., paid a $750,000 settlement to members of a Pennsylvania family who claimed their water was contaminated by the drilling technique called hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.”

Fracking involves pumping millions of gallons of chemically treated water underground to break up underlying shale formations and release natural gas. It’s controversial because the technique has generated a number of environmental concerns, including ...

Spanish government to ban fracking

The Spanish parliament is set to enact a regional ban on the method of natural gas extraction known as “hydraulic fracturing” or “fracking,” over environmental concerns.

According to Bloomberg, the ban will be enacted in the gas-rich northern Cantabria region, which has the potential to yield an estimated $100 million in exploration projects. Ultimately, though, the Spanish lawmakers determined that the environmental risks weren’t worth it.

Fracking involves pumping millions of gallons ...

New York extends fracking ban

The New York State Assembly has voted to extend a ban on the controversial natural gas drilling method known as hydraulic fracturing at least until May, 2015. Supporters of the measure said the extra time will allow for more independent health impact studies to be conducted.

A report in the Times Herald-Record quotes one of the sponsors of the bill enacting the ban as saying: “We have to protect our ...

Blogger calls for more study of fracking impact

In a piece for Mother Jones, blogger Kevin Drum weighs in on predictions that the shale gas boom will be around for decades, along with the controversial natural gas extraction method known as hydraulic fracturing.

Drum cites a study that the Wall Street Journal recently described as “the most exhaustive study to date of a key natural-gas field in Texas, combined with related research under way elsewhere.” The study concludes ...

Company to study fracking health impact

According to a story in the Huffington Post, a Pennsylvania company called Geisinger Health System has received a $1 million grant to study possible health impacts of natural gas drilling on the Marcellus Shale — a gas-rich underground rock formation that extends into Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and West Virginia.

The grant, provided by the Degenstein Foundation, is meant to underwrite a “large-scale, scientifically rigorous assessment” of the drilling technique ...

N.Y. appoints geologist with ties to fracking

New York’s selection of a geologist with industry ties for a study on the potential link between hydraulic fracturing and earthquakes has both environmentalists and government watchdogs concerned, according to a Bloomberg article.

The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation chose Robert Jacobi, a University at Buffalo professor who has advised drillers for two decades, to lead the seismology study as part of its environmental review of hydraulic fracturing.

The controversial drilling ...
