According to British newspaper the Mansfield and Ashfield Chad, a 26-year-old man left disabled from birth because of a traumatic brain injury has successfully sued for damages.

Although the amount is undisclosed, the story says the equivalent of millions of dollars have been awarded in similar cases.

Parents awarded $13 million in brain injury case

A story in the London Evening Standard out of the U.K. says the parents of a seven-year-old boy who suffered traumatic brain injury at birth were awarded the equivalent of about $13 million.

According to the story, officials at Princess Royal hospital admitted full responsibility and apologized for the accident that left the boy with cerebral palsy.

GE recalls equipment used at childbirths

According to a Fox Business report, General Electric Co. has issued a recall for kits meant to upgrade hospital equipment for resuscitating newborn babies.

Hospitals use Giraffe and Panda infant warmers to weigh and warm newborn babies. The devices includes equipment to provide oxygen if needed. Insufficient oxygen at birth can cause traumatic brain injury in infants.

Certain ages at greatest risk of brain injury

According to the Mayo Clinic, the very young and the very old are at greatest risk of traumatic brain injury.

The Clinic lists the people most at risk as:

  • Children, especially newborns to 4-year-olds
  • Young adults, especially those between ages 15 and 24
  • Adults who are 75 and older

Brain-injured boy to participate in clinical trial

A story in the Macomb Daily out of Michigan concerns a local boy who is participating in a U.S. Food and Drug Administration clinical trial on the use of umbilical cord blood-stem cells for lessening the effects of cerebral palsy.
