Strokes are country’s fourth-leading cause of death

Strokes, new and recurrent, occur nearly 795,000 times each year in the United States, according to Dr. Dion Graybeal, medical director of the Stroke Program at Baylor Medical Center.

In an interview with KERA, a National Public Radio affiliate station in Dallas, Graybeal said stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death in the country behind heart disease, chronic lung disease and cancer.

New study shows doubling of cancer risk with Depo-Provera

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research reports a study that found a link between the injectable contraceptive Depo-Provera and breast cancer in young women.

The study involved women between the ages of 20 and 44 — 1,028 of whom had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and 919 of whom had not.

The women who received injections of Depo-Provera within the previous five years were 2.2 times more likely to have been diagnosed with breast cancer than those who never used the contraceptive.

Blood Clot Risk Assessment Lists Birth Control as Risk Factor

The Coalition to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis provides a “DVT Risk Assessor” on the organization’s Website to help people gauge their susceptibility to developing these blood clots, which occur when blood clots form in the body’s deeper veins (usually in the legs).

The Risk Assessor asks about factors that have been known to play a role in the formation of blood clots, such as recent surgery, birth control pills, or a family history of blood-clotting disorders.

Journalist’s widow describes death from blood clot

“Press Pass,” the blog for NBC news show “Meet the Press,” features an interview with Melanie Bloom – widow of late NBC news correspondent David Bloom, and founder of the Coalition to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Melanie describes David’s death nine years ago from deep vein thrombosis, which is a blood clot in one of the larger veins. He suffered a pulmonary embolism when a blood clot from a vein in his leg migrated to his lungs.

Lopez McHugh investigating Beyaz blood clot risk

Lopez McHugh is currently accepting cases in an attempt to recover compensation for women who were injured and not properly warned of Beyaz blood clot risks. Higher-risk birth control pills also include Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella. At least seven scientific papers have shown that these drugs are more likely to cause blood clots than other, more established birth control pills.

Yaz maker faces allegations of sex discrimination

A federal court complaint alleges sex discrimination at the U.S. subsidiary of German pharmaceutical company Bayer, according to Bloomberg.

On April 2, Bloomberg reports, a judge denied Bayer’s request to bar the case from being considered for a class-action lawsuit.
