Grand jury investigating meningitis pharmacy

According to a report on Michigan Live, the Michigan Court of Appeals is allowing state Attorney General Bill Schuette to empanel a multi-district grand jury, tasked with investigating the specialty pharmacy responsible for a nationwide meningitis outbreak.

Doctor: Compounding pharmacy recalls not surprising

Critics of the pharmaceutical compounding industry aren’t surprised by a spate of recalls, according to a story in USA Today.

Two recent recalls include a Georgia compounding pharmacy called Clinical Specialties recalling syringes of the drug Avastin following reports that they may have caused eye infections; and the New Jersey-based Med Prep Consulting recalling all of its products after mold was found in bags of magnesium sulfate.

Death toll rises from meningitis outbreak

The death toll continues to climb from a fungal meningitis outbreak related to a batch of contaminated steroid medication, the Boston Herald reports.

Six months after health authorities first identified the outbreak, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are reporting 50 deaths and 722 illnesses connected to medication manufactured at the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Mass.

Patients believe outbreak wider than reported

The scope of a deadly outbreak linked to a Massachusetts pharmacy may be wider than initially thought, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports. And now some patients who received medications from that pharmacy suspect health officials may be undercounting the number of infections they’ve caused.

Company linked with meningitis pharmacy lays off workers

Ameridose LLC, which is affiliated with the specialty pharmacy behind a deadly meningitis outbreak, is laying off about 90 percent of its workforce, according to a Reuters story.

The company suspended operations on October 10 so that state and federal investigators could inspect its facilities, and is scheduled to remain shut down until November 19.
