Matthew Lopez joined Lopez McHugh as an associate attorney in 2009. Since then, he has handled numerous cases involving a wide variety of medical issues, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, medical negligence, dental negligence, birth injury, elder abuse, toxic chemical exposure, as well as other personal injury and wrongful death actions. Mr. Lopez exhibits a steadfast and dedicated approach to each case. Because of his compassionate and genuine nature, he is able to effectively communicate with clients from all walks of life.
Mr. Lopez graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2003. An interest in science and medicine inspired Mr. Lopez to also attain a minor degree in Biological Sciences.
In 2008, Mr. Lopez received his Juris Doctorate from Chapman University Dale E. Fowler School of Law with CALI “Excellent Achievement” awards in Legal Writing Skills and Remedies. While obtaining his law degree, Mr. Lopez interned for the Elder Law Clinic providing free legal assistance to the elderly. On one occasion, he successfully appealed through written and oral argument one client’s denial of disability benefits from Social Security.
From inception through trial, Mr. Lopez is experienced in successfully handling complex medical negligence cases. He has gone to trial for clients on such issues including failure to diagnose, failure to provide informed consent, and failure to properly perform certain procedures.
In 2016, Mr. Lopez worked with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office where he exclusively conducted preliminary hearings and jury trials as part of a Trial Advocacy Program for qualified civil attorneys.
Mr. Lopez also plays an integral role in the firm’s pharmaceutical and medical device mass tort practice. He has represented and helped achieve recoveries on behalf of hundreds of patients who have been injured by defective drugs and medical devices. In 2017, Mr. Lopez was appointed Co-Lead/Liaison Counsel for all plaintiffs in a California state court consolidation in Alameda County involving Cordis IVC (inferior vena cava) Filters.
Mr. Lopez is admitted to practice before all of the courts of the State of California, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, Central, and Southern Districts of California, the U.S. District Court for Colorado, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA), American Association for Justice (AAJ), the Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC), and the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA). Mr. Lopez has been listed by Thomas Reuters’ Super Lawyers publication as a Super Lawyers Rising Star each year since 2013 and was named to the Best Lawyers in America for mass tort litigation and class actions for 2018 and 2019.
Matt was born and raised in Newport Beach. A lover of the outdoors, Matt is passionate about the ocean, nature, and wildlife. Since his early childhood, Matt has participated in competitive sports. To this day, he plays in a recreational soccer league in San Clemente. In his spare time, Matt enjoys surfing and playing his guitar. Most of all, Matt relishes the time spent with his beautiful wife, Amorina, and their two boys.
