Settlement in Yaz case higher than first reported

Bayer is paying $142 million to settle 651 lawsuits over claims that its birth control pills cause blood clots, according to a newsletter published by the company. Initial reports announced settlements of about $110 million.

The latest figure was included in the Bayer Stockholders’ Newsletter for the first quarter. According to the newsletter, the company paid an average of about $218,000 a case.

TV report examines blood clot risks of birth control/drospirenone

Good Day Chicago recently aired a news segment on the blood clot risks that come from taking birth control pills.

The piece included an interview with FOX Medical Team’s Dr. Joette Giovinco, who described blood clots as a relatively rare but dangerous complication from oral contraceptives. She said a big hazard from blood clots is that they’ll break off and travel to the lungs.

“That’s when it can become deadly,” Giovinco said.

Journalist questions new Yaz, Beyaz, and Yasmin warnings

Officials with pharmaceutical giant Bayer said in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing that they expect more lawsuits over the company’s Yasmin line of birth control pills, Bloomberg reports. More than 11,000 lawsuits have already been filed over injuries allegedly caused by the drugs.
