Study questions safety of antidepressants

Researchers at McMaster University in Canada are questioning whether widely prescribed antidepressants do more harm than good. Their study is published in the online journal Frontiers in Psychology.

An article about the study in PsychCentral quotes lead author Dr. Paul Andrews as saying: “We need to be much more cautious about the widespread use of these drugs. It’s important because millions of people are prescribed antidepressants each year, and the conventional wisdom about these drugs is that they’re safe and effective.”

Trial deadline extended in birth control lawsuit

The Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia has delayed trial deadlines in the cases over Yaz/Yasmin/Beyaz birth control for another 60 days, extending them until July 9.

Judge Sandra Moss announced the latest extension on April 25, 2012. She’d previously announced a delay on March 9, 2012. This will allow the parties in the case more time to negotiate.

Settlement in Yaz case higher than first reported

Bayer is paying $142 million to settle 651 lawsuits over claims that its birth control pills cause blood clots, according to a newsletter published by the company. Initial reports announced settlements of about $110 million.

The latest figure was included in the Bayer Stockholders’ Newsletter for the first quarter. According to the newsletter, the company paid an average of about $218,000 a case.

Group says legislation ignores FDA loophole

According to a news release by the Consumers Union, a Senate committee is scheduled to discuss legislation that would fail to correct a loophole allowing dangerous medical devices to make it onto the market.

The Consumers Union is the policy and advocacy arm of Consumer Reports.

Same-day surgery patients not warned of blood clots

A study by the University of Michigan Health System found that patients receiving outpatient surgery, or same-day surgery that doesn’t require an overnight hospital stay, are at risk for blood clots. But unlike their counterparts who are hospitalized, the same-day surgery patients sometimes don’t get adequate warnings about the blood clot risks.

The study found that 1-in-84 of the highest-risk patients suffers a dangerous blood clot after surgery.

TV report examines blood clot risks of birth control/drospirenone

Good Day Chicago recently aired a news segment on the blood clot risks that come from taking birth control pills.

The piece included an interview with FOX Medical Team’s Dr. Joette Giovinco, who described blood clots as a relatively rare but dangerous complication from oral contraceptives. She said a big hazard from blood clots is that they’ll break off and travel to the lungs.
