Study suggests connection between earthquakes, fracking

A recent study suggests a connection between the natural gas extraction method known as hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” and earthquakes, according to the Huffington Post.

The Huffington Post reports that researchers used temporary seismographs to detect earthquakes of magnitude 1.5 or higher over a two-year period in a geologic area of Texas called the Barnett Shale.

Analyst says Johnson & Johnson should break up

A prominent Wall Street analyst is suggesting that the best way for Johnson & Johnson to cope with its many problems would be to break into smaller companies, according to an article in the Asbury Park Press.

Jami Rubin of Goldman Sachs suggests that splitting Johnson & Johnson’s three divisions into separate companies would free up money to invest, help the company grow faster and provide a bigger return to shareholders.

Antidepressant boom described as harmful

John Horgan, director of the Center for Science Writings at the Stevens Institute of Technology, wrote an article for the Chronicle of Higher Education in which he questions whether the surge in antidepressant prescriptions may be doing more harm than good.

In fact, he writes that clinical evidence suggests “American psychiatry, in collusion with the pharmaceutical industry, is perpetrating what may be the biggest case of iatrogenesis—harmful medical treatment—in history.”

Institute starts campaign for stroke awareness

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke has started a campaign designed to minimize the damage caused by stroke, with the theme: “Know the Signs. Act in Time.”

The idea is to get out word about stroke symptoms, with the hope that bystanders can get medical help for a stroke victim as soon as possible, and reduce the chances for death or more severe disabilities such as paralysis.

Canadian health agency issues Yasmin warning

Canadian regulatory agency Health Canada has issued a warning that the Yasmin line of birth control pills carries up to three times the risk of blood clots compared to other oral contraceptives, according to a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation report.
