First Federal DePuy Hip Replacement Trial Set to Begin

The National Law Journal is reporting that the first federal trial involving DePuy Orthopaedic Inc.’s metal-on-metal hip implant devices is set to begin on September 9, 2013 in Cleveland, Ohio. This is the first of nearly 8,000 cases currently being coordinated in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) before Judge David Katz.

Mirena IUD Litigation Update

A scheduling order has been filed by Judge Cathy Seibel in the Mirena IUD MDL, more formally known as, In re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434.

New Study Links Lipitor with Diabetes

A new study contributes to a growing body of evidence linking the cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins, such as Lipitor, with a higher risk of diabetes.

FDA approves new diabetes drug

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Johnson & Johnson’s drug Invokana, which will be used to treat type 2 diabetes.

According to the New York Times, Invokana is the first of a new class of diabetes medication. It causes blood sugar to be excreted in the urine, as opposed to many other drugs on the market that work by affecting the supply or use of insulin.

Court Records: Mesh Maker Knowingly Used Unsafe Plastic

According to court records, the company CR Bard Inc. used a type of resin-based plastic for its transvaginal mesh devices, despite being warned that the plastic wasn’t suitable for implantation in humans, Bloomberg reports.

Transvaginal mesh implants, made by a number of different manufacturers, are used to treat urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. They have generated widespread complaints of breaking down in patients’ bodies and causing health problems including infections, chronic pain and organ perforation.
