Parents of brain-damaged baby file lawsuit

An article from Pacific News Center concerns a lawsuit that parents of a baby born with severe brain damage filed in District Court of Guam. The parents claim that negligence on the part of the doctor overseeing the birth cause their baby’s disabilities.

The baby’s mother, Shamaralynn Terlaje, alleges in the lawsuit that she experienced prolonged bradycardia – or slowing of the heart rate – three times during her labor.

Family of boy with cerebral palsy awarded $21 million

A story in the Baltimore Sun concerns a family awarded $21 million over claims that negligent care by Baltimore’s Harbor Hospital caused their child to be born with cerebral palsy.

Jaylan Norfleet, who was 9 years old as of July, has a fully functioning mind but severe disabilities including very limited use of his legs and hands. An attorney representing the family described him as “literally trapped inside his body.”

New York officials seek delay on fracking decision

The New York Department of Conservation wants an extension for releasing a new set of rules that would regulate the controversial natural gas extraction method called “hydraulic fracturing” or “fracking.”

‘Nap Nanny’ recalled after infant deaths

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is forcing the manufacturer to take a portable baby recliner called the Nap Nanny off the market and offer full refunds to its customers, following complaints of five infant deaths.

There have also been 70 complaints of children falling out of the device, ABC News reports.

The CPSC claims manufacturer Baby Matters, LLC, refused to pull the Nap Nanny or offer refunds for five months, obliging the commission to file a complaint.

Court reverses ‘off label’ drug marketing conviction

A federal appeals court has ruled that pharmaceutical sales staff can’t be convicted for promoting drugs for “off label” uses, as long as those uses are otherwise legal.
