Myocardial infarction risk elevated by testosterone therapy

A story in Cardiology Today reports that some men taking testosterone therapy show an increased risk in myocardial infarction. Data shows an elevated risk in groups of older and younger men with a previous history of cardiovascular disease. This information, along with other studies prompted the FDA’s decision to review the dangers associated with testosterone therapy.

Myocardial infarction, stroke, and death were increased in the population of men taking testosterone therapy. The recent study analyzed the risk of MI in over fifty thousand testosterone therapy patients. The study also saw an increase in risk with age. The ratio of incidences between pre-testosterone therapy and post, across all ages, was 1.36. However, for men aged above 65, the ratio was 2.19 . Both indicate an increased risk of heart attack after being prescribed testosterone therapy.

The FDA is emphasizing the need for clinical trials to be revisited in order to evaluate these increased risks.
